A dramatic portrayal of ww ii in the Pacific and in California, the story brings characters to vivid life - from the henpecked Emperor Hirohito, the tragic Admiral Yamamoto, and spinmeister General MacArthur to the Amnerican family with the bratty but loving daughter who longs for her football star daddy's return. An excellent source list and chronology of the Pacific War follow the story.

I've Always Loved You Ann Seymour Books

Growing up during the Second World War as a young boy not old enough to serve, I nevertheless fought every battle and sat in on all the planning to win the war and punish those responsible, at least in my mind. This love story of a family in the war brought home to me what I had missed as a kid. How completely devastating was can be to those left at home, even if they are the winners. Just imagine being a family on the losing side....I don't want to even think of it.
I enjoyed the up close and personal view of....the waiting that goes on and on by a little girl in love with her dad. Very, very touching and sad, in a reasonable way. One of my uncles fought in the same area and fortunately came home with only a purple heart. Good writing!

I've Always Loved You Ann Seymour Books Reviews

Fascinating and heartbreaking are the first two words that come to mind after reading Ann Seymour's beautiful tribute to her family, especially her father, as well as all those who served in WW2.Seymour writes achingly beautiful prose as she gives us a view of WW2 through the eyes of an enchanting, gregarious child, who doesn't understand why Daddy has gone to war and will never return. But the well woven story goes beyond the eyes and ears of a loving daughter. I've Always Loved You moves between the diaries and journals her parents kept and the actual documented words of the power brokers of Imperial Japan in such a way as to give anyone a more fully rounded picture of WW2, which is an accomplishment worthy of applause.
"Only an ephemeral wall separates the past from the present," was observed by Seymour's father when on the battlefield he awoke from a dream of being with his wife to the utter amazement that she wasn't by his side - he was alone.
Pick up this book, read it, and better understand WW2 through a remarkable mix of memoir and facts.
I just finished this absolutely riveting Memoir by Ann Seymour that everyone who had a relative in World War II (or whose family lived through the 1940s on the Home Front) will love! I read it to "be nice" to someone I know, and ended up unable to put it down, as it tells the story through the eyes of a four-year-old who slowly begins to understand, as she lives through four years of war, what such conflicts mean to a single family. The brilliance of this book also centers on Seymour's research into what impact the war had on the Japanese Imperial Royal Family--some of whose family members totally opposed Japan's prosecuting this conflict! Not to be missed, and a great gift for anyone wanting to understand the Pacific War, which doesn't (until lately on HBO) get the same attention as the war in Europe. Brava, Ann Seymour! What a fabulous read! I gave it to a college friend who read it through without stopping, and now my husband, whose father fought as an "Island Hopper" for three years in the Pacific now has it, and is finding it an amazingly emotional experience to read.I agree.
I greatly enjoyed this book. The author has the lovely ability to be the young child who MISSED and lost her beloved father and to speak with that voice. This book should touch many people who lost their fathers to WORLD WAR 2.
Fine book
The author's Dad and mine had similar assignments in the South Pacific during World War II..both in the 143rd Field Artillery etc and both on the same South Pacific islands under the same command, for the most part. I was about 5 and Ann Seymour was probably about 4. So, her book opened a chapter of history that I yearned to know and had never heard much about. She and I were playmates in those early days. Her clever secondary theme..the Japanese Imperial family woven into the narrative was an interesting counterpoint. The nostalgia factor for all who grew up in the 1940's was stunning. But, the anguish of absence of a father is the strongest message of all, and in Ann's case, final absence. --Ann Bradshaw Jenkins
